Wiener's Circle in Chicago - H 2012An Illinois resident lost a $1 billion lawsuit in which she alleges her publicity rights as an individual were violated. She showed up at a popular Chicago restaurant called “The Weiner’s Circle” as a customer and was taped by the Travel Channel for a show entitled “Extreme Fast Food.” Judge Norgle decided that the Chicago restaurant is a “subject of general interest and of value and concern to the public” and therefore the customers claims are precluded by the Travel Channel’s First Amendment rights.

The Judge concludes his opinion with words of wisdom stating, “The risk of this exposure is an essential incident of life in a society which places a primary value of freedom of speech and of press.”
